Quick Chapter Summary

The Flood

  1. As man’s population grows, the ‘sons of God’ (possibly angels, most likely godly men) marry the ‘daugthers of men’ (possibly descendents of Seth).
  2. The Lord declares a limit of 120 years for mans life span.
  3. Nephilim (heroes of old, men of renown) were on the earth at this time.
  4. The Lord saw the great wickedness in man’s heart and grieved that he had made man.
  5. He decides to wipe everything off the earth, except for Noah who found favor in His eyes.
  6. Noah was a righteous man with three sons: Shem, Ham and Japeth.
  7. God tells Noah that He is going to destroy everything on the earth.
  8. He tells Noah to build an ark of cypress/gopher wood.
  9. The ark should have three stories/levels with rooms and be coated in pitch inside and out.
  10. Dimensional size should be 450 feet long x 75 feet wide x 45 feet high.
  11. It needed to have a door a roof and some windows no more than 18 inches below the roof.
  12. God explains that He is going to flood the earth and that everything outside the ark will perish.
  13. God tells Noah to gather his wife, his sons, and their wives into the ark, along with two of every kind of animal and bird and food for all of them.
  14. Noah did exactly what he was told.

Genesis Chapter 6

1And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, 2That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose. 3And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years. 4There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown. 5And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. 7And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them. 8But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD. 9These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God. 10And Noah begat three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. 11The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence. 12And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth. 13And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth. 14Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch. 15And this is the fashion which thou shalt make it of: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits. 16A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it. 17And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die. 18But with thee will I establish my covenant; and thou shalt come into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons' wives with thee. 19And of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort shalt thou bring into the ark, to keep them alive with thee; they shall be male and female. 20Of fowls after their kind, and of cattle after their kind, of every creeping thing of the earth after his kind, two of every sort shall come unto thee, to keep them alive. 21And take thou unto thee of all food that is eaten, and thou shalt gather it to thee; and it shall be for food for thee, and for them. 22Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he.

Matthew Chapter 9 Summary

Quick Chapter Summary

Chapter 9 recounts 5 of Jesus miracles, the calling of His disciple Matthew, and interactions with the Pharisees and John the Baptist’s disciples .

  1. Jesus returns to Nazareth (his home town) and heals a paralytic . (verses 1-8)
    1. Jesus first forgives the paralytic man his sins.
    2. Several teachers of the law think this is blasphemy.
    3. Jesus rebukes them and then heals the paralytic.
  2. Jesus calls the disciple Matthew to follow Him. (verses 9-13)
    1. Jesus calls a tax collector named Matthew to become His disciple.
    2. Jesus has dinner at Matthew’s house.
    3. Pharisees challenge Jesus’ disciples as to why he would eat with ‘sinners’.
    4. Jesus uses a doctor analogy to answer them about doctors treating the sick vs. the healthy.
  3. Jesus answers a question from John the Baptist’s disciples about why His disciples do not fast. (verses 14-17)
    1. Jesus uses three analogies (involving wedding guests/bridegrooms, new cloth patch on old garment, and new wine/old wine-skins) to explain that since He was here on earth, it was not an appropriate time for mourning/fasting for the disciples.
  4. Jesus heals a woman with a bleeding infirmity and raises a young girl from the dead. (verses 18-26)
    1. A synagogue ruler (Jairus) comes to Jesus to have Him come and heal his daughter.
    2. On the way to the rulers house, a woman with a bleeding infirmity is healed by touching Jesus’ clothes.
    3. Upon arriving at the house, Jesus tells the mourners that the girl is sleeping.  He raises her from the dead.
    4. The news of the girls healing spreads throughout the region.
  5. Jesus heals two blind men and asks them not to tell anyone about it.  They tell people anyway.  (verses 27-31)
  6. Jesus heals a mute, demon possessed man. The crowd is amazed, but the Pharisees say among themselves that He uses Satan’s power do drive demons out. (verses 32-34)
  7. Jesus tours the local area teaching, preaching, and healing.  He sees the crowds as sheep without a shepherd.  His final thought in the chapter is how the ‘harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.’  (verses 35-38)

Matthew Chapter 9

And he arose, and followed him. 10And it came to pass, as Jesus sat at meat in the house, behold, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with him and his disciples. 11And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners? 12But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick. 13But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. 14Then came to him the disciples of John, saying, Why do we and the Pharisees fast oft, but thy disciples fast not? 15And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? but the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then shall they fast. 16No man putteth a piece of new cloth unto an old garment, for that which is put in to fill it up taketh from the garment, and the rent is made worse. 17Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved. 18While he spake these things unto them, behold, there came a certain ruler, and worshipped him, saying, My daughter is even now dead: but come and lay thy hand upon her, and she shall live. 19And Jesus arose, and followed him, and so did his disciples. 20And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment: 21For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole. 22But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour. 23And when Jesus came into the ruler's house, and saw the minstrels and the people making a noise, 24He said unto them, Give place: for the maid is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn. 25But when the people were put forth, he went in, and took her by the hand, and the maid arose. 26And the fame hereof went abroad into all that land. 27And when Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying, and saying, Thou son of David, have mercy on us. 28And when he was come into the house, the blind men came to him: and Jesus saith unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said unto him, Yea, Lord. 29Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you. 30And their eyes were opened; and Jesus straitly charged them, saying, See that no man know it. 31But they, when they were departed, spread abroad his fame in all that country. 32As they went out, behold, they brought to him a dumb man possessed with a devil. 33And when the devil was cast out, the dumb spake: and the multitudes marvelled, saying, It was never so seen in Israel. 34But the Pharisees said, He casteth out devils through the prince of the devils. 35And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. 36But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd. 37Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; 38Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.

Daily Scripture Verse – Romans 6:1-4

Romans 6:1-4 1What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? 2God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? 3Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? 4Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

2×4 Time

This was the reading at Hosanna (my Church) several weeks ago.  I remember these first verses being a 2×4 to the head (think ‘Tommy Boy‘).  How often do I find myself using God’s grace as an excuse to sin…  I think we are all guilty of it from time to time.  Or maybe there is that one specific sinful addiction that you can’t seem to break.  The one that has be come so habitual that you’ve stop trying.

Romans 6:6 6Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?

Slaves to???

Paul makes a good point about the dedication we need to present in our lives.  Just as Christ was obedient unto death for us, we are asked to due the same out of joy and gratitude for what has been done for us.  This is something we should strive for daily…even if yesterday was a bust.  We can make the effort and pray for obedience to Christ and His will be done in our lives.

Mark 10:27 27Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible,but not with God; all things are possible with God.”

Prayer

My Father,

I pray for obedience today.  For obedience to your will.  For your newness of life to overtake my purpose and grant me the freedom from sin that your grace brings.

In His most Holy Name,

Book of Matthew – Matthew Chapter 8 Summary

Quick Chapter Summary

Chapter 8 is a chapter recounting many of Jesus miracles.

  1. Jesus heals a man with leprosy, tells him not to tell anyone about it. (verses 1-4)
  2. Jesus heals a Roman centurion’s crippled servant. (verses 5-13)
    1. The centurion comes to Jesus for help.
    2. Jesus offers to go to mains house, but centurion feels unworthy and tells Jesus that He can help him from there.
    3. Jesus is amazed by the man’s faith and heals his servant without going to his house.
  3. Jesus heals Peter’s mother-in-law Mary from a fever. (verses 14-15)
  4. Later in the evening after healing Mary, Jesus exorcises many brought to him who are demon possessed.  (verses 16-17)
  5. Jesus is approached by several individuals who want to follow him.  Jesus tells the first man that He himself has no home.  The second man says he needs to go and bury his father first and Jesus responds, “Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.” (verses 18-22).
  6. Jesus is awoken by His frightened disciples and calms a storm while out in a boat. (verses 23-27)
  7. Jesus casts demons out of two men. (verses 28-34)
    1. Demons acknowledge Jesus and begged to be cast into a nearby herd of swine.
    2. Jesus casts them into the swine, which then proceed to run down the hillside into the lake and drown.
    3. Upon seeing and hearing this, the local people came to Jesus and pleaded with Him to leave their region.

Matthew Chapter 8

And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour. 14And when Jesus was come into Peter's house, he saw his wife's mother laid, and sick of a fever. 15And he touched her hand, and the fever left her: and she arose, and ministered unto them. 16When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick: 17That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses. 18Now when Jesus saw great multitudes about him, he gave commandment to depart unto the other side. 19And a certain scribe came, and said unto him, Master, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest. 20And Jesus saith unto him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head. 21And another of his disciples said unto him, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. 22But Jesus said unto him, Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead. 23And when he was entered into a ship, his disciples followed him. 24And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but he was asleep. 25And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish. 26And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. 27But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him! 28And when he was come to the other side into the country of the Gergesenes, there met him two possessed with devils, coming out of the tombs, exceeding fierce, so that no man might pass by that way. 29And, behold, they cried out, saying, What have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? art thou come hither to torment us before the time? 30And there was a good way off from them an herd of many swine feeding. 31So the devils besought him, saying, If thou cast us out, suffer us to go away into the herd of swine. 32And he said unto them, Go. And when they were come out, they went into the herd of swine: and, behold, the whole herd of swine ran violently down a steep place into the sea, and perished in the waters. 33And they that kept them fled, and went their ways into the city, and told every thing, and what was befallen to the possessed of the devils. 34And, behold, the whole city came out to meet Jesus: and when they saw him, they besought him that he would depart out of their coasts.
